Blooms for Benefit

Blooms for Benefit is a nonprofit dedicated to sharing love and hope throughout the Davis and Sacramento communities by repurposing flowers from local events and organizations. These arrangements are thoughtfully redistributed through community service efforts, transforming moments of celebration into meaningful gestures that brighten spaces and uplift those who receive them.

On the drawing board

When developing the style and tone for Blooms for Benefit, I wanted to create a fun, whimsical experience that reflected the heart of our gatherings. I imagined the very flowers we arranged during our meetings coming to life—becoming the cheerful faces of the organization. That idea sparked my first sketches: walking flowers with arms around each other, marching forward together. I gave them simple, smiling faces and rosy cheeks to convey warmth and friendliness—an open invitation to anyone curious about joining our joyful community.

Over time, these flowers evolved into more dimensional characters, allowing for greater variety in color, expression, and depth. This gave us flexibility to place them in different settings across flyers and social media posts, making each piece feel fresh while still staying true to the heart of Bloom’s identity.

My flyer process often began with a breakdown of the event—once I understood the setting and activities, visual ideas followed. The Scavenger Hunt at the UC Davis Arboretum, for instance, inspired a map-like style flyer. Ducks were the first samples of animal friends in the "Bloomie World" since they are commonly found in the location our event was at.
